Planet Sport Football Africa – our weekly radio show rounding up the latest on African football and African footballers playing around the world – is broadcast by more than 80 stations across Africa, from Cameroon to Malawi, Ghana to Nigeria, Lesotho to Zambia.
As well as informing and entertaining thousands of listeners, prompting lots of response on WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook, our 30-minute weekly shows also have a wider impact. We asked a few of our radio stations to tell us how they use PSFA, and the difference that it makes …
PSFA is a school
Foundation Radio in Bamenda, Cameroon, broadcasts on 100.0 FM, and station manager Mokun Njouny Nelso says the programme has a key role to play in training its staff:
“Planet Sport Football Africa is now a cornerstone in our sports programming. Its forecast and roundup on European football has garnered a huge audience obliging us to do a rebroadcast of the program.
“Besides, the professionalism in the presentation and the presenters has made PSFA a school for our young sportscasters.
“In fact, Planet Sport Football Africa has become a ‘cannot do without’ in our sports schedule. We greatly appreciate the collaboration.”
Increased our sports audience
For Sammy Ekai, sports presenter on Ekeyokon Radio in Lodwar, Kenya, where the show goes out on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons on 97.1 FM, PSFA has helped grow the station’s listenership.
“We love your sports news and updates – a big salute from us to the Planet Sport team! Planet Sport Football Africa’s news and updates are so informative for sports lovers – the show has really increased our sports audience. At least those who don't understand Swahili can now listen to our sports coverage. It has helped us to feed our listeners with all the required world sports news and this is what our listeners have said in abundance. Planet Sport Football Africa is the best!”
Listened to in homes, cars and shops!
The programme reaches people in many different settings, as Moses Mbewe, news editor at Chete FM, based in Nakonde, Zambia (on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe) explains:
“As a radio station that fully supports sport, we have welcomed Planet Sport Football Africa in our hearts, our homes, our cars and our shops. Chete 89.9 FM clocked one year on September 1 2020 and it feels so great to have never stopped airing the show.”
The show goes out on Saturdays at 10.30am.
